HCI was the biggest winner at this year's 新空下 XinYao Singing and Songwriting Competition, claiming three championships in four categories at the grand final.

The 2023 新空下 XinYao Singing and Songwriting Competition grand final was held on Saturday (July 29) at the Singapore Polytechnic Conference Centre. The event was witnessed by Ms. Gan Siow Huang, Minister of State for Education and Ministry of Manpower, and contestants from local secondary schools, junior colleges, polytechnics, and universities competed for championships in solo, chorus, open composition, and creative composition categories.

The champions in the solo, open composition, and creative composition categories were respectively Zeng Jingying, a year 6 student, ZengTao Jinhao and Huang Renjie, both in year 4, and Lu Guanyi and Xu Huiyao, both in year 5. All five students are from Hwa Chong Institution.

Zeng Jingying, participating in the 新空下 competition for the third time, told Lianhe Zaobao in an interview that she was very happy to win the championship this year after only achieving third place last year. She felt that she was too focused on the details during last year's competition, whereas this year she was more relaxed and enjoyed the competition more.

Sharing a similar experience are Lu Guanyi and Xu Huiyao, who secured second place last year but finally won the championship this year. The duo has been composing together for about three years. Both felt that they had grown each year through the guidance of their teachers and absorbing knowledge from various sources, and were proud of finally being able to claim the championship this time.
